Description
A clean and honest example of a late 19th century French grape collection hod, that would make a fabulous planter, floral centrepiece, log basket or ice bucket.
Worn on the back of the pickers / workers in the vineyards whilst gathering grapes from the vines – they would throw the grapes over their shoulder until the hod was full and then emptied into a larger container.
Made of Galvanised metal which does show some signs of ageing patina and rust as can be seen in the photographs.
The straps on the back are a thick and brown leather that are adjustable for the pickers height.
This is a historical piece as they are not used during the harvest anymore due to modernisation and mechanical innovation in vine harvesting – this example is also unusual in that it is in original un-tampered with condition – many similar hods that you may see on the market have been painted and sign-written in later years to “add value”
Useful for many things from planter to log basket or other container or centrepiece for flower arrangements.
