SOLD – 1940’s Bus Stop

An early 1940’s British enamel double-sided request bus stop believed to be from Bournemouth

Description

I never thought a bus stop could be beautiful until I met this one.

I am selling a double sided example that consists of three layers of signs all bolted together to make the complete piece.

There are the two outer layers that say “REQUEST BUS STOP” in black text on a yellow background and an inner layer that is double sided and has the words “FARE STAGE” applied in black on a silver background

Most examples of similar signs that I have seen in the past have been separated and sold as two signs – this example is still in its original condition.

There are obvious signs of ageing and rust spots – as shown in the images and expected for an item of this age.

It is believed that this sign was in use in the 1940’s though I have seen reference to the 1930’s also and that it came from Bournemouth, though I’m afraid I cannot prove this.

The sign measures and weighs:

Height = 33 cm / 13″
Width = 42.5 cm / 16.75″
Depth = 0.6 cm / 0.25″ (three layers of steel)
Weight = 2.5 kg / 5.5 lbs
