SOLD – Fairground art

This 62cm high mask with an open mouth which was probably used in a ball throwing game to win prizes.

Description

Vintage and possibly antique collectable fairground art piece in good but used condition and showing a real air of age in the patina and condition of the paintwork and exposed areas of wood – around the teeth as an example. It is a delight to handle this item.

Hand carved and painted soft wood stylised mask with large open mouth – possibly used for playing some kind of ball or bean bag throwing game or other game of accuracy at some time. This is a colourful and very three dimensional piece and would look great in any room in your house as well as a club room, restaurant, bar or shop.

The reverse side shows a recessed area to the back of the mouth with pins that may well have held a sheet of coloured glass in place – it would be possible to back light this mask in that circumstance as it has been hollowed out by the carver.

There is a short string hanging loop on the reverse that holds the mask flush to a wall.
