Description
An early Edwardian antique walking stick / cane with bamboo shaft and 1903 hallmarked pommel / tip and collar which is also engraved with the owner’s initials WVR in a script style and the maker’s mark RHS.
The hallmarks match on both the collar and the pommel and indicate the makers mark – RHS in a pentagon – and that the silver was assayed in London in 1903. All the hallmarks are visible under magnification and are slightly worn due to cleaning – the collar may need additional cleaning.
The maker’s mark – RH over S into a pentagons representative of R.Hovenden & Sons – Robert, Albert and Charles William Hovenden who were active in London from 1893.
There is a metal (possibly brass) tip on the end that touches the ground which shows signs of wear as expected. The 36″ / 90 cm shaft is in good condition with slight ageing again as expected.
